You like to be your own boss. us goal getters, we're energetic and like to take on several projects…maybe without finishing the last one you started, I'm GUILTY OVER HERE, too! my advice would be to Slow down and focus on what you really want so you can put all of your energy into the Good things that are about to unfold!

The best view comes after the hardest climb.

Don't let your list of "should-dos" and "to-dos" get in your way. Nothing can stop you.

Instagram Checklist

success doesn't happen overnight

I know. We all just wish we could snap our fingers and be an overnight success or gain 10k insta followers, but that's not how the cookie crumbles. As a sidetone here, if someone tells you they gained 10k followers overnight, they are either A) someone that just went viral across several platforms or B) they're lying.

I'm going to share with you a little bit about my journey and how I got started and let you in on a few things that I did to get where I am today.

I feel like a good starting point is for you to know that I have done "art" for as long as I can remember, and being creative is just a part of who I am... if we are being honest, it brings me more joy than it probably should. I took art elective classes all through school and even took art college courses. I did custom paintings and murals for years before I decided to finally cave and buy a camera (something other than my Nikon Coolpix) and pursue my photography dream.

I bought a fancy (DSLR) used camera off a yard sale ad in November of 2016 (without a clue how to use it), made a few goals (and wrote them down), and jokingly told my husband THAT NIGHT that I was quitting my job in a year.

Google and I became fast friends, and I quit my corporate manager job in November of 2017. God works miracles, AM I RIGHT?!

Within a year of running my business full-time, I doubled my corporate salary (while being able to be my own "boss") and have more flexibility with my days than I ever imagined possible. Time is money, and I'm not willing to give up any more of my time, anytime soon.

In my third year, I am surpassing my five year goal and I'm not looking back. I'm building a brand that I was day dreaming of just two short years ago and I'm happier than I've ever been. I don't think I was cut out for those 50 hour work weeks, as much as I thought I was - ha!

I also could not be where I am today without my insanely supportive and motivating husband, Chris, or my Mom that picks up all of my slack for this family and frequently watches Grayson during shoots and weddings. Thankful, SO thankful, for family (near and far) and for the friends that have supported me from day one.

To those of you waiting to chase your dreams. Just go for it.

Buy the camera, change career paths, move cities. It takes a lot of hard work and consistency but simply just START.

Ok, now I sound like a cheesy ad, but my story is based on three things - Faith, Goals, and Optimism. You won't know until you try it.

What I learned along the way, however, is that I was extremely passionate about business and entrepreneurship, as well. I get fired up when people ask me how I was able to build a business from scratch and quit my job in a year. Why? Because I know you can do it, too.

I want to share with you here a few practical tactics that I believe got me to where I am today:

  • I have very little, if any, business knowledge and I didn't even know how to operate the camera I bought. Do you know what that means? I am "self-taught". I googled everything I didn't know. And I still do. You can often find me on my computer doing research at midnight. Here are a few recent searches on my google page: "How to create columns in WiX", "How to delete confirmation email in MailChimp", "Tips to prepare for launch day"... the list goes on. Don't be afraid to ask for help when you need it, but also don't be overwhelmed by the thought that you don't know how to do something. If I can figure it out, so can you!

  • YouTube, YouTube, YouTube. YouTube taught me most of the things I know about photography. What time of day to take pictures, how to put my clients in poses that will flatter them, how to use a flash with a DSLR camera... You name a topic, friend, and I've probably watched 10 videos on YouTube about it already.

  • Test your audience. HELLO INSTAGRAM POLLS, where you at?! Get to know your audience by asking them what they like to see on your Instagram feed vs your stories, why they come to your page, how they found you (or came across your page), and where they're from. All of these are valid questions that can help you identify your audience and find out why they follow you and what they want to see more of.

  • Gather monthly with a group of entrepreneurs in your community (even if you have to set up a group yourself) or join a Mastermind (whether you pay a small monthly fee, 10,000 dollars, or find one for free). This has been CRUCIAL to my business as I have been expanding my brand. Gathering with groups of people, whether its virtually or in person, can help get your creative juices flowing and provide solid feedback from your peers.

Go get em', GOAL GETTER!
